IMEI Registration in Indonesia
While filling out the customs declaration form upon arrival in Indonesia, you will encounter a section related to phone details, including the IMEI number, model, and other information. However, entering your IMEI in the customs declaration does not automatically register your phone.
IMEI registration is necessary if you plan to use a local SIM card in your phone for more than 90 days. There are two primary methods for IMEI registration:
-
Temporary Registration:
- This can be done at any mobile operator's office or authorized SIM card shop.
- It is free of charge and typically valid for 3 months.
- You may be able to extend the registration for an additional 3 months at the operator's office.
-
Permanent Registration:
- This is done through the Indonesian customs office (Bea Cukai).
- It involves paying a tax of 40% of the phone's value exceeding USD 500.
- Permanent registration is valid indefinitely.
If you are staying in Indonesia for less than 90 days and do not require a local SIM card, IMEI registration is not necessary. Your phone will work with your foreign SIM card and roaming services.
Here's a breakdown of scenarios and recommended actions:
- Staying less than 90 days and need a local SIM: Get temporary IMEI registration at a mobile operator's office or SIM card shop.
- Staying more than 90 days and need a local SIM:
- Within 60 days of arrival: Register your IMEI at the customs office and pay the applicable tax.
- After 60 days of arrival: Options are limited and may involve purchasing a local phone or seeking assistance from specialized services.
- Staying more than 90 days and do not need a local SIM: No action is required.
