Getting to Nusa Penida by Ferry
There are two main ports on Bali that offer transportation to Nusa Penida:
Padang Bai: This port is located on the east coast of Bali and is the only option for taking a ferry to Nusa Penida with your motorbike. Ferries depart twice daily, usually around 10:00 AM and 2:30 PM, except on Sundays when there is only one departure at 10:00 AM. The ferry ride takes about 1 hour. Be sure to have your motorbike documents and driver's license with you.
Sanur: Located on the southeast coast of Bali, Sanur offers frequent speedboat services to Nusa Penida. Speedboats depart throughout the day, with departures starting as early as 7:00 AM and running until the afternoon. The journey takes approximately 30-40 minutes. Speedboats do not allow motorbikes on board.
Additional Tips:
- Booking in advance: While it is possible to purchase tickets at the port on the day of departure, it is recommended to book online in advance, especially during peak season, to secure your spot.
- Ticket Prices: Ferry prices are generally cheaper than speedboats. Expect to pay around 120k IDR for a ferry ticket for one person and a motorbike. Speedboat prices vary depending on the company and time of day, with prices ranging from 150k IDR to 300k IDR per person for a one-way trip.
- Documents: When traveling with a motorbike, be prepared to show your passport, driver's license, and original motorbike documents (STNK) at the port.
- Local "Helpers": Be aware of local individuals who may offer to assist you with purchasing tickets or bypassing queues. It is generally recommended to purchase tickets directly from the official ticket counters to avoid potential scams or inflated prices.
- Travel Time: Consider the travel time to the ports from your location on Bali when planning your trip. Padang Bai is located further away from popular tourist areas like Kuta and Seminyak compared to Sanur.
- Alternative Ports: There are also speedboat services available from Kusamba and Serangan, but these options may have less frequent departures and may not be as convenient depending on your location on Bali.
- Ferry Schedule: The ferry schedule can be subject to change, so it is recommended to arrive early at the port and check with the ticket counters for the most up-to-date information.
- Nusa Penida Transportation: If you are not bringing your own motorbike, you can rent one upon arrival at the main port on Nusa Penida. However, the quality of rental bikes may vary, and roads on the island can be challenging in some areas. Alternatively, you can hire a taxi or driver for the day to explore the island.
By considering these factors, you can choose the most convenient and cost-effective way to reach Nusa Penida and enjoy your trip to this beautiful island.
